HR has digitised. But have we really transformed?
HR Operations Excellence Benchmark 2026
A recent HR Operations Excellence Benchmark 2026 study by HROne caught my attention.
The study, based on 489 organisations across 12 industries, reports an average HR operations maturity score of 54.6/100, while only 11.5% of organisations reached the highest “Intelligent” maturity stage. (Big News Network)
What I found particularly interesting is the gap between having HR systems and having truly efficient HR operations.
Some numbers stand out:
🔹 Payroll reliability: 77.8/100
🔹 Employee service delivery: 41.8/100
🔹 64.6% of HR teams still manually chase work at least once a week
🔹 60.3% identify manual follow-ups and approvals as a major operational challenge
🔹 62.8% still report monthly or do not report regularly
🔹 Only 9% report joint HR–IT ownership of data, adoption and governance. (Big News Network)
For me, the biggest takeaway is :Digitisation is not transformation.
Implementing an HRMS, automating attendance, moving leave requests online, or generating dashboards does not automatically make HR operations mature.
The real transformation happens when:
1) Processes move without constant follow-up
2) Employees get timely answers and support
3) Data is available when decisions need to be made
4) HR and IT work together on systems and governance
5) Technology reduces administrative effort rather than creating another layer of work
6) AI becomes part of the workflow—not just another dashboard
The report presents a progression that I believe HR leaders should think about:
Accuracy → Flow → Visibility → Intelligence
First, get the fundamentals right, Then make the work flow and create meaningful visibility and finally, use AI and analytics to create leverage. (HROne)
As HR professionals, perhaps the question we should be asking is not:
“How many HR tools do we have?”
but rather:
“How much faster, simpler and more employee-centric has HR actually become because of them?”
That is where HR Operations can move from being a support function to becoming a true business enabler.
